Reef heron observed feeding at riffle upstream from Terewarewa Bridge at the Waiwhakaiho River mouth. Based on different markings on the legs, this reef heron is a different individual from the pair of reef herons observed on a rock outcrop further downstream on 3 April 2016. This reef heron had large feet in relation to its body. Does this make it a juvenile? It successfully caught fish but was also observed playing with a stick. After 20 minutes it flew off with another reef heron that flew by.

Heron flew across Lee Breakwater, over the Port and around Paratutu Rock. Looked like a reef heron in flight, but not 100% sure it wasn't a white faced heron.

Reef heron observed on rock outcrop downstream from Terewarewa Bridge. Note three dark patches on left leg. Looks like same heron as one of the pair spotted on 3 April 2016 at the same location. Observed flying and feeding http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/2872289 Harrier flew over at one point and all birds behaved alarmed.
