Description:
Reef heron observed feeding at riffle upstream from Terewarewa Bridge at the Waiwhakaiho River mouth. Based on different markings on the legs, this reef heron is a different individual from the pair of reef herons observed on a rock outcrop further downstream on 3 April 2016. This reef heron had large feet in relation to its body. Does this make it a juvenile? It successfully caught fish but was also observed playing with a stick. After 20 minutes it flew off with another reef heron that flew by.
