Description: Finally - a flower - wonderful. I have no idea why this species has such a reputation for being difficult. Although it's been slow to flower, in other respects it's been incredibly resilient with minimal protection in the tunnel. Date: 19 May 2013, 09:23. Source: Lathyrus splendens. Summary[edit] Description: No flowers yet, but whatever else they say about this species, it's certainly not hard to grow. It may of course turn out to be frost tender. It does get the most remarkable, quite large (3mm) emerald green aphids - in orderly rows along the new shoots. They don't seem to do any harm. I'll try and get a picture. Summary[edit] Description: Very rare in the wild and uncommon in cultivation apparently, despite the fabulous red flowers (see Phillips & Rix book on conservatory plants). The seedlings have been easy enough to get going so far. Date: 24 October 2011, 16:25. Source: Lathyrus splendens seedlings. Author: peganum from Small Dole, England.
Lathyrus splendens—pride of California. A vine-like wild pea that clambers over chapparral plants in its restricted range of southern San Diego County and Baja California. Few peas can match L. splendens for showiness. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
