Chiefly marine; rarely brackish. Distribution: Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific. Supramaxilla small, if present. Branchiostegal rays 12-26, except the neotenic Bathysaurus mollis with 8. Vertebrae 49-63. Non-hermaphroditic, except Bathysaurus.
