Summary[
edit] Description: Last Friday was a wet night for trapping moths but I persevered anyhow because of the mild weather and it was indeed well worth it! With 61? species in total and some great garden records, but with a noticeable drop in numbers. Highlights were year first species of Toadflax Brocade (I still never have trapped the first brood) and Bordered Pug (2nd garden record and last seen in 2014). Also I had never trapped the often confused pair of species Lychnis and Campion together before until this night. The weather is pretty changeable now and we are back to the unsettled weather just as the summer holidays start! Summary[
edit] Description: Less moths but more quality Trapping under clear skies on Monday night yielded a mixed catch of quality moths and worn dross. With temperatures getting a little chilly early morning recently, there is certainly an Autumnal feel in the early morning air. Pick of the bunch was a Twin-spotted Wainscot, a garden first, along with other new moths such as Wormwood Pug, Mouse Moth, Iron Prominent and Orange Swift. Also a lovely yellow-tinged Marbled Beauty caught my eye this morning. A strange one this year, Common Carpet is my first record for this year! Totally missing out on the first brood for this species Away from the moths I am also quite excited about receiving my new camera and lens, stepping up from my ageing 10.2mp Sony Alpha 200 I have bit the bullet and gone for a 3 year old Sony A65 24.3mp camera, hoping to use my old lenses as well as purchasing a Tamron 90mm 1:1 Macro (my current macro is a 1:2) Catch Report - 28/07/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson Trap Macro Moths 1x Twin-spotted Wainscot [NFG] 1x Wormwood Pug [NFG] 1x Common Carpet [NFY] 2x Iron Prominent [NFY] 2x Mouse Moth [NFY] 1x Orange Swift [NFY] 1x Campion 1x Clay 1x Cloaked Minor 1x Common Carpet 4x Common Rustic 3x Dark Arches 5x Dot Moth 1x Grey Dagger 1x Haworth's Pug 1x Large Twin-spot Carpet 1x Large Yellow Underwing 1x Lesser Yellow Underwing 1x Magpie Moth 1x Maiden's Blush 3x Marbled Beauty 1x Mottled Beauty 1x Nut-tree Tussock 2x Oak Hook-tip 9x Riband Wave 2x Ruby Tiger 1x Rustic 1x Scarce Footman 2x Scalloped Oak 1x Setaceous Hebrew Character 4x Shuttle-shaped Dart 1x Silver-Y 2x Single-dotted Wave 4x Straw Underwing 2x Uncertain 1x Willow Beauty 3x Yellow Shell Micro Moths 1x Epiblema foenella [NFG] 1x Acleris laterana [NFY] 2x Trachycera advenella 10x Blastobasis adustella 1x Epiphyas postvittana 5x Amblyptilia acanthadactyla 1x Emmelina monodactyla 5x Pleuroptya ruralis 1x Endrosis sarcitrella 1x Celypha striana 2x Argyresthia albistria. France Trip - Las Descargues - 27/06/16 to 01/07/16 - Part One - Macro's Hello all. I recently got back from a really enjoyable 5 nights of Moth trapping, Butterfly and Bird watching in the Midi-Pyrenees. I went with good friends Roger and Steve whom accompany me on many trips out in our County of Hertfordshire. It was decided at the end of last year that we should go for a short week away to sample some of the Moths that would be on offer in South-West France. The article below is copied from Robin Howard's Lot Moths website. He describes it perfectly so I didn't feel the need to re-write it! "The Gite that we stayed in lies in a stunningly beautiful part of the Haute Quercy in the Lot southwest France. Located at the end of a ridge overlooking the Bave Valley it is surrounded by rolling, wooded hills, deep, river-cut gorges and on the nearby Causse, limestone pavement. The proximity of the limestone Causse de Gramat and volcanic Massif Central have produced a complex local geology that has formed the basis for a mosaic of habitats supporting a diverse flora with a rich moth and butterfly fauna. Over 1820 species have been recorded so far from the immediate area with more than 1600 species taken from the environs of the farm alone. Mercury vapour and actinic traps are run throughout the year in and around the farm with weekly forays made onto the limestone pavement and local poplar plantations, whilst the nearby volcanic peaks are regularly visited during the summer months for the more esoteric species. For further information regarding holidays and research opportunities at our farm and for a full description of the area and available accommodation please visit our sister site at
www.lasdescargues.com or email us for a comprehensive information pack". Robin and Sue are both fantastic hosts and could not do enough for you, I urge anyone to go there and experience the amazing wildlife that is on offer there. The species site list is in excess of an incredible 2000 species of Moth! In 16 years that is incredible, and shows how special this habitat really is. Our target was 300 species and with over 200 Macro's we may just get to the 300 mark with the Micro's still to sort. We ran 2 static traps in the garden (Both MV 125s) and I brought my 160w MBT Blended bulb on a tripod. We then had access to a further two traps, an MV Robinson and an Actinic Midi-Robinson which we could take further afield, in fact we tried three further sites. Macro Moths listed so far... Hemel Hempstead Field Trip - 11/06/13 David Kirk, Roger Prue and myself made a trip to two of the Boxmoor sites in Hemel Hempstead. The evening looked absolutely perfect for moths with cloud cover expected throughout the night and a minimum of 13 degrees, though when I arrived at the first site at Gadesprings the cloud had promptly vanished. We set two traps up at Gadesprings and left them to their own devices, then we made our way to Bovingdon Brickworks where we would setup 2 more traps running from a generator. As we started to setup, more cloud had developed and the wind had dropped so we were confident of getting a few moths. The moths were as always few and far between at the light first, but then as the night went on, at about 10.30pm we were seeing much more variety in singles, with just a few moths having an influx, notably Green Carpet, Silver-ground Carpet and the micro Monopis weaverella. We packed up at about 1.30am at Bovingdon, and it took awhile to count everything....species were still flying in and god only knows how many we would have recorded had we stayed until first light. Of the two sites, Bovingdon did the best, but what we didn't expect was to find a further 24 species at Gadesprings that did not feature in the Bovingdon catch. Strangely and in keeping with this odd year, one of the commonest moths was Nut-tree Tussock, in which we recorded 4 to the 80w Actinic and 1 to the 125w MV. This is a very late record, considering a few of them were fresh. We did not get Poplar Hawk-moth, which was pretty much expected from Gadesprings. Notables of the night were moths new to myself, Mompha raschkiella, Strophedra weirana and Elachista atricomella, May Highflyer was also a seldom seen moth. All in all we had an incredibly enjoyable night and would like more of these please Mr weather! Of all the moths identified, there is only one we are struggling with, which will have to be omitted as it is too worn and dead apparently! The jet black Prays fraxinella/ruficeps will have to be checked by Colin Plant, I did confidently predict one of these, judging by the amount of Ash in the vicinity. 84 species total 60 species at Bovindon 52 species at Gadesprings an extra 25 species at Gadesprings [] = Only at Gadesprings 11/06/13 Bovingdon Brickworks - 1x 125w MV Robinson Trap & 1x 80w Actinic Trap run from 9.45pm until 1.30am Macro Moths 1x Red Twin-spot Carpet 1x Spruce Carpet 1x Brown Rustic 1x Rustic Shoulder-knot 1x White Ermine 2x Common Wave 1x Nutmeg 1x Peach Blossom 3x Heart & Dart 1x V-pug 2x Peppered Moth 1x Brown Silver-line 2x Purple Bar 1x Mottled Rustic 5x Scalloped Hazel 1x Elephant Hawk-moth 1x Clouded-bordered Brindle 5x Orange Footman 5x Small Phoenix 2x White Pinion-spotted 4x Treble Lines 2x Pale Tussock 3x Clouded Silver 2x Grey Pine Carpet 5x Nut-tree Tussock 4x Flame Shoulder 6x Grey Pug 4x Mottled Pug 1x Oak Hook-tip 1x Straw Dot 2x Common Marbled Carpet 1x Least Black Arches 1x Pale Prominent 3x Common White Wave 1x Angle Shades 5x Brimstone Moth 10x Silver-ground Carpet 15x Green Carpet 3x Common Swift 2x Common Carpet Micro Moths 1x Parornix sp 1x Strophedra weirana [NEW!] 1x Prays fraxinella/ruficeps 1x Caloptilia sp 3x Mompha raschkiella [NEW!] 1x Epiblema cynosbatella 2x Cochylis atricapitana 2x Syndemis musculana 2x Celypha lacunana 2x Pseudargyrotoza conwagana 1x Nematopogon swammerdamella 2x Agonopterix arenella 1x Argyresthia trifasciata 3x Metzneria metzneriella 1x Scoparia ambigualis 2x Crambus lathoniellus 8x Monopis weaverella 1x Agapeta hamana 1x Nemapogon cloacella 1x Cochylimorpha straminea 11/06/13 Gadesprings, Hemel Hempstead - 1x 125w MV Robinson Trap & 1x 160w MBT Trap run from 9.30pm until 2.00am Macro Moths 2x Silver-ground Carpet 1x Common Carpet 1x Common Wainscot [] 1x Angle Shades 2x Heart & Dart 1x May Highflyer [] 1x Silver Y [] 3x Buff-tip [] 1x Campion [] 1x Nutmeg 2x Brimstone Moth 5x Green Carpet 2x White Ermine 2x Common Rustic [] 1x Peppered Moth 2x Cinnabar [] 3x Iron Prominent [] 1x Bright-line Brown-eye [] 2x Flame Shoulder 2x Rustic Shoulder-knot 1x Small Square-spot [] 1x Common Wave 3x Treble Lines 1x Clouded-bordered Brindle 1x Pale Prominent 1x Shuttle-shaped Dart [] 1x Swallow Prominent [] 1x Broken-barred Carpet [] 2x Common Pug 1x Yellow-barred Brindle [] 2x Scalloped Hazel 1x Pale Tussock 1x Clouded Silver 2x Grey Pug 1x Vine's Rustic [] 2x Spectacle [] 2x Common Swift 2x Marbled Minor 1x Garden Carpet [] 1x Common White Wave 3x Brimstone Moth 1x Oak-tree Pug [] 1x Small Clouded Brindle [] Micro Moths 1x Mompha epilobiella [] 1x Pseudargyrotoza conwagana 1x Bactra lancealana [] 1x Nematopogon swammerdamella 1x Celypha lacunana 2x Elachista maculicerusella [] 1x Elachista argentella [] 1x Elachista atricomella [] 1x Bactra lancealana []

Summary[
edit] Description: A stonker of a catch With favourable weather dominating over the weekend and into the start of the week, the moths from the night before were walked a distance from the trap to keep the re-capture rate to a minimal and the trap was once again switched on at approximately 9.30pm. Come the morning at an early 5am I was pleased to actually have to do a bit of writing! Best moth of the night for me was found by my wife on the inside of our French doors! Capua vulgana, a typical woodland moth that feeds on Bilberry and Rowan hedges. Also it was good to add the day-fling Micro Nematopogon schwarziellus to my garden list, attracted to the trap early evening. These two additions bring my Garden Micro Moth list to 284. It was also nice to record a Campion, not a common moth for me. The beginning of August Ok ok, I am a month behind...but hey it's been hectic times for me and the moths haven't been bad either. This Summer has certainly been one of the best for Hertfordshire in terms of rare records, new for County records and records of moths that haven't been seen for several decades. Here below are two catches before I went away for my 2 week holiday to Turkey (And yes I did take a light and net with me..more on that soon!) Highlights were a shocking garden first Phycitodes binaevella and new for years included Campion, Sycamore, Hypatima rhomboidella and the best a 3rd County record of Gelechia Nigra, the first was taken in 1890 and I was lucky enough to trap the 2nd record in my garden on the 21st of August 2013...to get another was very pleasing indeed. Why the moth is so scarce I do not know (The larvae feed off of Poplar and Aspen trees) Another three surprising new for years were Red Twin-spot Carpet, Nut-tree Tussock and Scorched Carpet, all 3 are not common in my garden in fact I missed out on a 2015 record totally for Red Twin-spot Carpet, so these second generation examples were very welcome.
