A striking yellowjacket mimic,
Temnostoma daochus. I have seen these a few times in my garden over the years, but they are usually skittish, and I've never been able to get a photograph of one. (And I had presumed they were members of the genus
Spilomyia, which are quite similar in appearance.) This is the first BugGuide record for North Carolina, and there are not a lot of records overall. This looks to be a female, with relatively small eyes.
