Lactuca aculeata is very close to L. serriola (mother of lettuce). It is a rather rare weed in the Middle East. As u can see, it has entire leaves andmany short spines.

This is one of the commonest weeds of the world. Few know that it is the progenitor of the edible lettuce and that its leaves are normally pointing to the north and south - a natural compass ! Thus avoiding high radiation on lreaf surface and loosing less water.

One cannot imagine that this is a kinfd of lettuce. It is unique in having a tuber underground. The flowers open in nightime and normally close already in morning. In cloudy days they stay open, like this one. I was really lucky this time.
