Summary[edit] Description: Back to the garden for some Autumnal moths I set the trap up last night as it needed a little warmer than Sunday and Monday night, it even clouded over later on and at some point during the night we had rain as the egg trays were soaked. Some nice additions to the garden year list with Beaded Chestnut and Green-brindled Crescent in the trap. Pink-barred Sallow was on the fence and new for the garden, Macro No.260 since I started recording in August 2012. Other than that it was standard fare with Lunar Underwing taking top spot and Large Ranunculus picking up in numbers. The weather stays unsettled this week, but Thursday night is looking nice and mild on the forecast. Hay Wood and Gadesprings Field Trip report - 02/04/14 Hello all. Last night I was joined by David and Steve for our first trapping session on the Boxmoor Trust's land. The ensuing conditions were perfect with a good amount of cloud cover present and temperatures holding up at dusk at about 15 degrees. The only niggle was that damn breeze, which thankfully did drop as the night progressed. David had already set-up three traps at Gadesprings earlier on, so the plan was to use four traps at Hay Wood and at the Old Barn, then go back to Gadesprings after we had finished. Setting up 3 different traps throughout the wood and leaving one out on an exposed position near the barn, we were all set and ready for the deluge. The moths did come, sparingly at first with a spankingly fresh Water Carpet being the first moth in, Brindled Pugs, Diurnea fagella's and Common Quakers followed. We fared much better this year compared to last year where we had our first trapping session over 3 weeks later than this date, and were catching pretty much the same species, although last year was very odd. See HERE for last years report. It was very nice to see so many Water Carpets again, last year we managed about 10, this year we easily trumped that with 20+ individuals. Also the freshest Waved Umber I have ever seen graced the side of the trap near the Old Barn. Species of note included 3 Shoulder-stripe, 1 immaculate Purple Thorn and a year first Pale Pinion, which was found sitting in the long grass near the trap at the Old Barn. So onto the list of moths recorded. Catch Report - 26/05/12 - Balls Wood, Hertford About 12 or so people turned up for this first official trip of the year. The weather had been hot and sunny for the previous week and at last the nights were warm - not freezing cold! There was a stiff easterly breeze, but in the wood we scarcely noticed it. A total of 7 mv lamps were operated from generators from 21.30 hours until 04.30 the following morning, though only three of us camped out until dawn, with most people heading for home by about 01.00 hours. Interestingly, of the 64 macro species caught, 13 species were caught only in that later period between 01.00 and 04.30. One was recorded as a larva crawling across the sheet - presumably having fallen from the overhanging Hornbeam branches. The macro moth highlight was probably POPLAR LUTESTRING of which we had several. The micros bring the total up to 91 species (with 3 species still outstanding - awaiting genitalia dissection). Best by far is EPINOTIA NANANA (book page 230) which has not been seen in Hertfordshire since 1966 and which I labelled as probably extinct here. The caterpillar feeds on Spruce. In the following list those marked with an asterisk (*) were named by genitalia dissection. Numbers are approximate. If anyone can remember anything that I have not listed do please let me know. A tricky Ermine Hello everybody. On Monday night I trapped in the garden as usual. Conditions were quite favourable with overcast skies and little wind, although we had had a downpour in the afternoon at some point this didn't dampen my spirits. The catch wasn't bad at all with no less than 25 species. Emmetia marginea was a new Micro moth for the garden, a Bramble feeder. Yellow-line Quaker was the only moth new for the year, and like the Black Rustic a species that I missed out on last year...will I get a Brick to complete the trio of 'The Lost Moths of 2012?' It was also nice to get the stunning form of Sallow f.flavescens, a different Beaded Chestnut and a much darker form of Barred Sallow. Now..there is a bit of confusion at the moment as to what Ermine I have caught. As I went out to the In the dark at 6am in the morning I suspected that it was a very late (my latest) Yellow-tail...I potted it up and then noticed it was too elongate for this and Brown-tail, plus it had neither yellow or brown on the end of its abdomen. This could only mean either White Ermine (for which it initially looked nothing like) or Water Ermine! Which hasn't been recorded since the 1940's! The moth was checked for the spotted hindwing markings that White Ermine has, this moth does not appear to have any markings, it is pure silky white and not worn either. But then there is the antennae question, in White Ermine the pectinations of the antennae are uneven and longer one side than the other, in Water Ermine these are pretty much symmetrical. My moth is asymmetrical so I am really baffled at present! See what you all think. For starters the wing shape looks too slim and rounded for White Ermine. I will get this dissected to be sure. In the trap this morning were just 6 moths, not a great deal but did get garden firsts of December Moth and Beaded Chestnut. The Beaded Chestnut I thought I may not get this year, as it gets later and colder..but wait it seems to be getting a little warmer! so fingers crossed for some more.
