Length: 12-15 cm. Plumage: grey above; white below; male with narrow chestnut breast band, continuous with chestnut forecrown; white forehead patch edged with black frontal band continuous with black eyeline; female with wider chestnut band and chestnut subocular line; no black band on forehead or black line through eye. Immature like adult but lacks head markings and breast band grey, often broken or absent. Bare parts: iris brown; bill black; feet and legs grey with blackish joints. Habitat: coastal lagoons and estuaries, rare in fresh water habitats. Resident.<389><391><393>
