Small to large grebes. Straight, pointed bills, sometimes upturned. Ornamental plumage on neck or head during breeding season. Neck long and slender. Secondaries almost as long as primaries. Tarsus shorter than middle toe with claw, middle claw much shorter than outer. Naked patches on crown of young.
