Description
provided by World Register of Marine Species
This species develops large 'fronds', growing into elegant vase shaped colonies. Fronds are unifacial, with no corallites on the underside (Sheppard, 1998). Colonies are initially cup-shaped, developing broad, unifacial, upright to horizontal fronds, or becoming irreguarly contorted. Corallites are immersed to long and tubular, the latter being strongly appressed on upright fronds. Calices are 1.5-2.5 mm in diameter. Colour: usually uniform dark or greenish-brown, yellowish to grey. Abundance: common in a wide range of reef habitats. In deep water, colonies are flat with mostly immersed corallites (Veron, 1986).
