A BIG deep breath. A record-breaking night in Bedfordshire I joined Matt and Lionel at Home Wood on Monday night in Bedfordshire. The day had been absolutely scorching and hit nearly 30 degrees during the day and the night was meant to go no lower than 19/20 degrees, perfect muggy weather for moths despite clear skies we had absolutely no wind at all and no moon to contend with. We setup 5 traps and a light and sheet under sweaty conditions, it was hot stuff indeed and once again I attracted Horse-flies! As soon as it got dark, moths were absolutely everywhere with micros at first in their hundreds and then the Geometers started coming in and finally the Noctuids and boy was there action around the lights. I've been out before and had trouble with lots of midges and flies but never have I had as much trouble from inhaling moths as well. The species kept tallying up and it was hard to keep up. We got to 100 species about 2 hours in and then from midnight it was about 1 or 2 a minute being jotted down. Highlights were massively over-whelming with two County first species to start with....Rosy Marbled and Elegia similella. Copied from Andy Banthorpe's email. Gen Dets of species retained so far. Carpatolechia fugitivella m & f – been recorded there before Carpatolechia notatella f – 3rd county record Neofaculta ericetella m confirmed Dioryctria abietella f Satyr Pug f 18th county record, only third since 1996 Teleiodes vulgella f (worn dark grey) Caloptilia alchimiella m Nemapogon cloacella m Nemapogon ruricolella m – 4th county record Coleophore kuehnella m (the white one) Other Macro highlights were Cream-bordered Green Pea, 10+ Scarlet Tiger's, 5x Marbled Brown and Mere Wainscot. In total for the time being we recorded 140 species of Macro and 148 species of micro, eclipsing my highest ever previous species of 252 with a grand total of 288 species!! We finally finished packing up (which took over 2 hours) at 4am as it was getting light. Thanks guys for the help you gave me and adding to the list as we went through the night. Welcome Wetland Wanderer Another warm and muggy night on Sunday night (A bit behind with reports!) and yet another opportunity to trap...when will these warm and sultry evenings end? Possibly tomorrow with clearing skies forecast but with such high daytime temperatures still on the cards the forecasters are still suggesting minimums of 14 degrees all week. Easily the best moth of the night was a pristine Silky Wainscot, a bit of a shock really. Is it a primary migrant or a wanderer, I think I will go with the latter. Another good moth for the garden was a beautiful Bordered Pug. I also managed to get the magnifying glass out and pot up a tiny micro moth that turned out to be a first for me Bucculatrix ulmella. Conobathra repandana was also nice to see, as I missed out on one last year having previously seen one on the 17th August 2012 Rhyacionia buoliana and Eucosma obumbratana also boosting the garden list. Up to Beds! Home Wood - Field Trip - 02/07/14 Hi all Last night I joined Matt and Trent (Or Lionel, confused.com lol), at Home Wood near Biggelswade in Bedfordshire, hopping Counties for the first time this year (in fact I shall be travelling to Essex tonight, two Counties in as many days). Conditions were absolutely spot on with dominant cloud cover and a warm sultry temperature we set about our business to cover a nice wide area of the woodland. But before that we had to do a spot of tractor pulling.. well van, as Trent's van got stuck in the mud (I wonder if that piece of rope ever came off the tow-bar?) The evening started well with plenty of micros and Geometers turning up first to the sheet. Then at about 11pm it all went a bit mental really, the traps that we had left were teeming with moths, you could barely see the trap underneath them, peering into the skinner actinic was like something out of a tropical rainforest catch and inhalation was definitely not a good idea at this point! I have yet to write the list up as I have spent all morning photographing all of the moths which hasn't been easy with the warm weather and wind. I think we must be knocking on the door of 200 species of Macro and Micro for the night. Acleris kochiella, Assara terebrella, Eulamprotes atrella, Acleris holmiana, Hedya ochroleucana, Larch Pug, Mere Wainscot, Olindia schumacherana and Zeiraphera ratzeburgiana were new for me So here are a few beauties from last night, mainly micros and several were new to me. I wonder if we get a first for Bedfordshire out of all the things we potted, and the sack load of tubes heading David Manning's way. Summary[edit] Description: Garden Catch 08/07/18 - More garden firsts! Another good night mothing in the garden, and with the previous nights catch emptied 50m away down the bridlepath, recaptures were at a minimal once more. There was a lot of activity come the morning and amongst the common expected moths were some real crackers. It was two a piece between the Macros and the Micros for the incredible 4 new for garden species in one night. The most shocking being Platytes alpinella, a predominantly coastal species which i've taken before on the Essex coast, so it was a bit of a shock to get one in the garden trap, also confirmed as only the 2nd County record. Southern Wainscot was also a presumed wanderer on such a warm and muggy night. Two other species that caught my eye and that were instantly potted were the other 2 garden firsts, the stunning Figure of Eighty and the pretty in pink Celypha rosaceana. All in all an amazing night. Garden species count for 2018 now upto 351. Here are the new for year species.
