Larix occidentalis. Larch are deciduous conifers,something of an oddity,and they change brilliant golden in the autumn,as this young tree here was,but I am afraid I missed the main show by a week or two :-(

This is a good example of the different stages of tamarack or larch trees losing their needles. (they are the yellow ones). They are a deciduous conifer that lights up our Montana forests this time of year as they turn brilliant yellow, then brown, then drop the needles.
