Maximum longevity: 5 years (captivity)
Observations: This common laboratory animal is one of the fastest ageing mammals. Even in captivity, most animals do not normally live more than 3-4 years. Maximum longevity has been reported to be 5-6 years (Caleb Finch 1990), though anecdotal reports of animals living more than 5 years have not been verified. Caloric restriction extends lifespan and appears to delay ageing (Yu et al. 1982).
