THE SABLE. This animal, found in the colder portions of Asia and North Americans zealously hunted because of the great value of its fur. It is most appropriately depicted in the snow, where one of these animals, having killed a Rabbit, seems to be called upon to defend its prey from a hungry brother, which, from the position of its claws, seems inclined to fight for a share of the booty. The animal in the upper part of this picture shows the mark- ings most prized by the Sable hunter : the lower part of the neck yellow, the cheeks gray and the rest of the fur nearly black.
