This is a species complex poorly understood and lumped under the name Juniper Hairstreak . This may actually be a separate species called Muir`s Hairstreak but note that it does not use Sargent Cypress as a host plant at this location ( uses California Juniper here ) .

I just happened to scare up this beauty in the scrub oak and a few white flowers near the observatory. I've never seen one of this hairstreaks before, but it may be my favorite :)

I think this is the Callophrys gryneus siva subspecies of the Juniper Hairstreak. Rifle Falls State Park
