Classification

provided by World Register of Marine Species
Hartman (1978) thought Helmetophorus was related to the hesionids, while Glasby & Fauchald (1991) thought it belonged in Flabelligeridae, and finally Salazar-Vallejo et al. (2007) moved it to Acrocirridae.

Diagnosis

provided by World Register of Marine Species
Emended diagnosis by Salazar-Vallejo et al. (2007: 473): ''Body cylindrical, tapering posteriorly. Cephalic hood dorsally elongate, truncate ventrally. Body papillae reduced; interparapodial papillae elongate, clavate. All chaetae simple, straight, outer chaetal cortex with successive bands of denticles. Nuchal organs convoluted. Branchiae cirriform. Nephridial lobes lateral. Perhaps pelagic forms.''
