Moth Trapping down on the farm part 3 - This place continues to show me new moths! I was back at my parents on Tuesday night armed with 5 traps and enough cable to spread them around to try and maximise light coverage. The day was scorching hot and quite unbearable for work as I had to drive around a giant greenhouse on wheels, a minibus! At setting up time at 9pm it was still a Mediterranean 25 degrees and it only dropped to 20c at 4am so it was absolutely perfect, bar the full moon and gusty wind. But you can't have everything can you? The moths were quick to the lights and the list was creeping up steadily and by midnight we had over 100 species which was pleasing indeed. Some local species were nice to see, such as Waved Black and Dotted Fan-foot. Best moth was probably my second ever Anarsia lineatella, having seen my first a few weeks ago at the same location and in the same trap! It was to be the 3rd County record. I was pleased to get a fresh example of Grapholita funebrana, a first for me and possibly may have been over-looked in the past. Another new moth for me was a Cochylis flaviciliana/roseana. It is more likely to be roseana as this is local in the County but I will get it double-checked just to be sure, still a really pretty moth but o so tiny! I also potted up an unusual looking Scoparia, which seems to resemble subfusca but it still doesn't look quite right for any of the British species, it most likely is an aberrant form of one of the commoner Scoparids. Again it will be checked to verify the record. The farm never disappoints and this visit was no different with 166 species recorded. Summary[
edit] Description: Tuesday night moths Well the weather during the daytime has been just glorious with temperatures hitting the low 20's early on in the week and as a result clear skies were the order of the day (or night) and thus come the morning it was a little cool and misty early Wednesday. The catch wasn't bad at all with 4 new for year species noted and some nice micro moths to pot up and inspect. The fourth Oak Nycteoline of the year was also a form i've never seen before which was nice. A very grey Mompha epilobiella was also noted, lacking the usual yellowy straw colouration, the markings under a hand lens still corresponded for this species. Common Quaker saw a massive rise to 25 examples. Summary[
edit] Description: English: Two more catches Well I got my wish of just a common migrant, I got a Silver Y on Tuesday night, but unfortunately no rarities, never mind I was very happy to see two lovely little Caloptilia semifascia's, last year I only saw one post hibernation in April, but the two previos years I recorded them in Autumn. Not much elese of note apart from another Tachystola acroxantha, the 4th for the year now and my latest records of Large Yellow Underwing, Common Marbled Carpet and Barred Sallow so far... The weather has been quite dramatic lately with strong SW winds and warm nights, on Sunday night the temperature didn't drop below 14 degrees! Summary[
edit] Description: Well I seem to have escaped any of the April fool's shenanigans this year..4 days already into April it really is frightening how quickly the year is going already. Though they say the months go bye faster the older you get, so in comparison to most moth'ers mine must be just trickling by at the moment! Sorry for my stereo-typical moment there! It really is hard to get the younger generation interested in things other than I this and E that (ipad and err something else). Back to moths Pine Beauty was a lovely new moth for the garden, I have been expecting one of these, as about 200ish metres down the bridlepath we have a small conifer plantation. New for year were Streamer (which wouldn't stay still for it's photo-shoot so a pot shot is all I can offer) and the micro Caloptilia semifascia. Apart from that it was business as usual. Summary[
edit] Description: Field Trip - Ashwell Quarry - 30/03/17 On Thursday night I made a trip to Ashwell Quarry in the far North-West of the County of Hertfordshire. The weather was just perfect with highs of 21 degrees during the day and whilst setting up at 7.30pm it was still 17 degrees and even at packing up time at midnight the car temperature gauge read still read a balmy 15.5c all the way home! I decided to run 4 traps in the end, a mixture of different light sources. The four traps were 2x 125w MV Robinsons, 1x 160w Mercury Blended Robinson Trap and my homemade twin 20w wemlite actinic trap. The results to each trap were quite shocking. Both MVs had less than 20 moths in and around the traps. The MBT had just 12 moths but did attract the only Red-green Carpet of the night. The 20w twin wemlite actinic homemade jobby had 87 moths in and around the grass and had the only Small Quaker, Early Grey, Diurnea fagella and Dotted Chestnut of the night. 25 of those moths were Red Chestnut. It was just great to see so many moths flying this early on in the season..a sign of things to come perhaps? Lets hope so and I look forward to surveying this land again soon. Summary[
edit] Description: From the garden trap, Thursday and Friday night Still ticking along nicely here in Stevenage but the amount of moths has dipped dramatically this past week. Still with migrants abound its worth keeping the light burning on milder nights. Also with the lack of photography this time of year I thought I would take a few pictures of some Caddis flies (Which of course are closely related albeit more primitive than moths). Below are my recent highlights. New Species and species of note for the Garden/Year Report - Back Garden - Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson Trap Scarce Bordered Straw [NFG] (28/09/17) - Thursday night I was lucky to pot up a Scarce Bordered Straw on the collar of the trap, a garden first! Having recorded a Bordered Straw in 2014 it was great to add the other one to the garden list. I had a moment where I thought i'd recaptured the same moth that I had trapped on Monday night at Ashwell and where upon I released it near Hoddesdon after photographing it on Tuesday. As you can see from the photo, they are very similiar and even have the same 'nick' out of the wing! The differentiating feature is the fringe looking at the picture. Caloptilia semifascia [NFY] (28/09/17) - The commonest Caloptilia in my garden and regukar every year here since we moved here in 2012 (It took a week for one to show up back in August 2012). This particular specimen had lovely black speckling over it. Pink-barred Sallow [NFY] (29/09/17) - On Friday the catch was pretty poor but I was rewarded with only the second garden record of this Sallow species that from my experience prefers damp woodland and marshes. The last time I saw it was in 2014. Lunar Underwing (28/09/17 and 29/08/17) - On both nights, Lunar Underwing has been the commonest moth in the trap and a lovely dark individual with black spots on the termen was selected for a photo. Stepping back in time...an October round-up Yep...it's time to pull my finger out and finally update my blog for the year with catches from both October and November and a few from December still to write up I feel I might be some time! I will leave it brief and literally just list the catch results. Here is October, and we follow on from the first catch of October (a few blog posts back) and with a low catch of just 7 moths, this theme would continue through the month. On the 07th the big surprise was my latest ever record of Hypsopygia costalis and a nice rarely recorded second brood example and also another 2 new for year moths, Red-line Quaker and Feathered Thorn. On the 13th I had a great catch of 22 moths due to the mild night and I also recorded my 12th Caloptilia semifascia of the year which is a massive boom on previous years of 1's and 2's. Another migrant Nomophila noctuella was also nice to see and a different example than the one on the 7th. On the 16th it all went pear-shaped and the weather was very cool at night time, and feeling more and more Autumnal. Switching to the 40w Actinic it yielded just 2 moths! On the plus side the November Moth was new for the year and yet another Nomophila noctuella and again a different moth. On the 18th it was back to the MV and another meagre catch but with a pristine Merveille du Jour I wasn't complaining. This was almost a month after my first record this year on the 28th of September! Two days later on the 20th was more of the same. With 6 nights off and back to trapping on the 26th it was a much better catch with 12 moths of 7 species and a welcome splash of colour from another Merveille du Jour. With mild nights abound I ran the trap on 3 consecutive nights and I was rewarded with lots of moths. Best of all were year firsts of Ypsolopha alpella and Brick on the 28th. Summary[
edit] Description: Migrants continue in blustery conditions Still getting a few moths despite awful localised downpours, clear nights with a bright moon and the wind picking up at times. It is not going to get any better as there have been warnings issued for stormy conditions Sunday/Monday so I expect the trees will look a lot different after that! On the moth front I was lucky getting my second Vestal of the year on Thursday night, a darker form this time with a pronounced chip on the wing..I often wonder if some moths have been in someone else's trap before mine and particularly with migrants, who knows! Still no Black Rustic, Brick or Merveille. But I did get some nice Caloptilia's on both the 22nd and the 24th. Catching up with catches. The prequel.. A flipping huge catch last Monday night, apologies for being a week behind but time seems to run away with me during peak moth season with photos to take, edit and then the list to type up. This catch was just prior to the previous post about the fantastic night's trapping on the farm. For my garden this amount of moths was brilliant with loads of new moths for the year list. Best of all there were two new species for my garden, namely Epiblema costipunctana, a fairly common Tortrix moth that I use to catch on the farm regularly. The other was Eana incanana, another good species and one i've trapped before on the farm also. Not content with one, I trapped another on Friday night! Happy mothing everyone! Summary[
edit] Description: Tuesday night moths Well the weather during the daytime has been just glorious with temperatures hitting the low 20's early on in the week and as a result clear skies were the order of the day (or night) and thus come the morning it was a little cool and misty early Wednesday. Summary[
edit] Description: Weekly round-up A quick report of the last week's efforts using my garden Robinson trap with different light sources. Slim pickings but happy to pick up what probably will be the last species of the year, namely Winter Moth and Mottled Umber (Scarce has sporadic good and bad years here) A bonus Udea ferrugalis on Tuesday night didn't even survive the night in the fridge for a photograph the next day, I guess it had one heck of a journey. A bonus Caloptilia semifascia as well on Thursday night, my 8th this year now which is a record and an almost identical Mottled Umber last night to Tuesday's specimen (I'm glad I kept it now as I probably would have said it was the same moth in the dark and grey conditions we've had all week). Photography has been a nightmare with leaving for work and returning from work in the dark nearly and even today the dull conditions aren't much better and the last few days it hasn't really got light at all. Here are my results - VC20 Stevenage, Hertfordshire 06/12/16 - 125w MV 3x Winter Moth [NFY] 1x Mottled Umber [NFY] 1x Udea ferrugalis 1x Acleris schallariana 07/12/16 - 125w MV 2x Winter Moth 1x Acleris schallariana 08/12/16 - 40w Actinic 2x Epiphyas postvittana 1x Caloptilia semifascia 09/12/16 - 9w UV Led 1x Mottled Umber 1x Epiphyas postvittana That is all :). Bovingdon and Gadesprings - Field Trip - 19/05/14 Roger, Steve and I made a trip to Bovingdon for some late Spring and early Summer species and boy were we in for a treat! We first trapped this site last year on the 11th of June (Trip report HERE) This time though we were simply overwhelmed with species coming in faster than one could jot down. Interestingly we caught most species that we caught last year but as a comparison, we are about 6 weeks ahead of last year (because of the cold Winter of 2012/13) Of course last year was abnormal so we could not go on last years records too much, some of the species that we did get were typically 2 weeks earlier than the books state. The evening was perfect, with a mild muggy feel about it and still 20 degrees at 8pm, the cloud was still with us and the moon stayed at bay (at least until we packed up) The threat of rain seemed to have subsided and the breeze had dropped so we were very lucky indeed. We did not get our target species Light Feathered Rustic, but it needn't have mattered as it was a long shot anyway and there was plenty of interest coming to all four traps as we worked them throughout the night. Highlights included an Alder Moth, Buttoned Snout, Seraphim, Clay Triple-lines, Grass Rivulet and Coronet. The smaller moths were also in abundance, particularly around the twin Actinic trap and several were taken away to examine in natural light. Highlights of the micros included Bucculatrix nigricomella, Mompha lacteella, Mompha raschkiella, Strophedra weirana and Platyptilia gonodactyla, 3 of those new to me. We also managed to get an unusual looking Treble Lines of the form obscura. It really was so nice to see good numbers of the common species as well with 30+ Clouded Silver, 40+ of Red Twin-spot Carpet and Mottled/Common Pug both numbering easily in excess of 25 specimens each. Exhausted as we had finished around 1am at this site, then onto Gadesprings to empty the two traps there, where we found another 3 Alder Moths, Figure of Eighty and Light Brocade amongst a reasonable amount of species. Home at 3am, up at 6am and I felt like I had a hangover this morning, all good fun! Numbers below are as close as I could record!
