Hallock Muller (2019) pers. comm.: "I consider this a valid species (Larsen 1976 originally considered it a junior synonym of A. lessonii, but I sent him Caribbean specimens and he published an Addendum). There are two rather distinct morphologies, but a few weeks ago I tried to separate examples of each for Martina Prazeres to do molecular work on, and found pretty much every variation between the two morphologies, so either they are hybridizing or there is one variable species. I know from working in the Indo-Pacific how variable both A. lobifera and A. lessonii can be."
