Previously thought to be extinct in Singapore, several trees of Bruguiera sexangula were accidentally discovered in 2002 on Pulau Tekong. Following which the propagules were collected and grown into older saplings for mangrove restoration projects in Chek Jawa (Pulau Ubin), Pasir Ris Park's mangroves, West Coast Park', and Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve. Recently in 2008, a new population of B. sexangula trees was discovered in Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve.
