Takahe were thought to be extinct for about 50 years before being rediscovered in a remote area of Fiordland. They've been strutting their stuff as local celebrities ever since. (021109#070)

Stan Molles (American) meets Takahe (New Zealander). Takahe are one of the few surviving species of flightless New Zealand bird. Takahe were thought to be extinct for about fifty years before one last population was discovered in a remote montane area of Fiordland. Now you can see them on Tiritiri Matangi open sanctuary, an island off the coast of Auckland city that is being restored to native forest by the local community. (This is a scan of a slide.)

One of the pair of takahe at Orokonui. We were told that the pair has so far proven to be infertile, which is a shame, but that there are plans to make them foster parents for other takahe eggs.
