"American Bird Grasshopper (Schistocerca americana) - female Note: We thank Gacko (psuedonym), Contributor, to BugGuide for accurately identifying this grasshopper. For confirmation of this ID on BugGuide: http://bugguide.net/node/view/1207124 2 April 2016 Greenbelt Corridor Ray Roberts/Lewisville Lake FM 428 Access Area, Aubrey Branch Denton County, Texas We observed this single American Bird Grasshopper off the trail next to the Elm Fork Trinity River. According to BugGuide, this native grasshopper's range extends from ""eastern, central North America, south into Mexico and into South America. Somewhat migratory, in northern part of range may be immigrant only, not breeding."" This is a large grasshopper and grows to about two-and-a-half inches in length (or from 40-70 mm). In the United States it occurs generally in the eastern half of the nation from Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Maryland (on the Atlantic Coast) south and west to the Great Plains and Southeast and as far west as Texas. For the most part it is absent from the Upper Midwestern states and the US West as well. It does not appear to range as far north as Canada. In Texas, the BugGuide range map based on those reporting to this online service and network, American Bird Grasshopper has been reported to occur throughout the year except the month of February. It is widely occurring in the North Texas region per observations made to BugGuide.
