C'est le nom vul- gaire de deux espèces de graminées qui appar- tiennent à deux genres différens : l'une, connue sous le nom de Chiendent des boutiques, est le Trlticum repens de Linné (v. Froment) ; l'autre , le Chiendent pied de poule , est le Panicum dac- tylon, Linn. .v. Panic). Famille de l'ordre des Myriapodes , qui formait autrefois le genre Jule de Linné , ayant pour caractères : corps cylindrique , muni d'un grand nombre de pieds disposés par paire sur chaque anneau ; an- tennes de sept articles. Ces insectes , comme tous ceux de l'ordre dont ils font partie, ont le corps linéaire crustacé; la tête est de même grosseur que le corps ; la bouche se compose de deux man- dibules épaisses , sans palpes , visiblement divisées en deux dans leur longueur par une suture, avec la partie supérieure munie de dents et recou- verte par une espèce de lèvre. Les quatre pre- mières paires de pieds , qui ont leur article basi- laire beaucoup plus long que dans les autres, et insérés sur la ligne médiane du corps , paraissent faire partie accessoire de la bouche. Les autres pieds sont très-courts , munis d'un seul crochet à l'extrémité, et insérés par paire sur chaque an- neau, à compter du quatrième pu cinquième. Les organes mâles sont situés après le septième an- neau et ceux femelles après le second , mais ils ne paraissent guère qu'après que les insectes ont at- teint au moins le tiers de leur longueur totale , ce qui , dans quelques espèces , n'arrive que vers la ^deuxième année. Les stigmates sont situés en ar- rière de la seconde paire de pattes de chaque seg- ment. Les deux ou trois derniers anneaux étant apodes doivent aussi être dépourvus de stigmates. Ces organes communiquent avec une double série de réservoirs pneumatiques répendant des tra- chées sur tous les autres organes. M. Straus croit que ces réservoirs ne sont point liés entre eux par une trachée principale. Comme cette obser- vation serait anomale, je pense qu'elle mérite d'être de nouveau examinée. Degéer et M. Savi , professeur à Pise, se sont occupés d'étndier les mœurs de ces insectes; on doit au dernier d'avoir rectifié une erreur que l'on avait commise par rapport aux stigmates , et d'avoir indiqué leur vraie place, car ce qu'avant lui l'on prenait pour eux, n'est qu'une suite de pores propres à laisser écouler une humeur fétide, et que peut-être ces insectes emploient comme moyen de défense. L'accouplement était connu, le mâle et la femelle sont appliqués immédiate- ment l'un contre l'autre ; sa saison est pendant l'hiver pour l'Italie ; mais les résultats de cet acte sont loin d'être aussi clairs. Degéer avait dit que, lors de la première mue , les petits ont six pattes, M. Savi leur en voit vingt-deux à la première mue, je suis tenté de croire que quelques mues intermédiaires lui ont échappé. C'est une obser- vation qu'on peut engager l'auteur à recommen- cer lui-même. A la seconde mue, le nombre s'ea élève, suivant lui, à trente-six paires; à la troi- sième à quarante-trois; enfin à l'état adulte le corps du mâle a trente-neuf segmens, et la femelle soixante-quatre. Ces insectes, avec un nombre de pieds si rap- prochés et si courts , ont l'air de glisser sur le plan de position plutôt que de marcher. Famille des Myriapodes , formant auparavant le seul genre Scolopendre de Linné. Ainsi que les Chilognathes, ces insectes ont le corps allongé , mais déprimé. On peut leur donner pour caractères : corps al- longé, déprimé, segmens ne portant qu'une paire de pattes; bouche armée de deux pieds-mâchoires percés en dessous pour laisser écouler une liqueur vénéneuse. Ces insectes ont la tête déprimée , les antennes, au moins de quatorze articles , plus minces à leur extrémité ; la bouche se compose de deux man- dibules offrant un petit palpe, d'une lèvre dont les deux divisions extérieures sont comme annelées et représenteraient des palpes labiaux, d'une pre- mière paire de petits pieds réunis à leiîr base et unguiculés au bout , et enfin d'une seconde paire de pieds joints h leur naissance , dilatés, ayant le crochet très-développé et percé en dessous pour le passage d'une liqueur vénéneuse ; le corps est membraneux , plus large vers le milieu de sa lon- gueur. Chacun des segmens est recouvert d'une plaque écaille use portant une seule paire de pattes; la dernière, plus développée que toutes les autres,
