The snake was on the hiking trail as we were hiking out of McGee Canyon. We gave it wide berth; it slowly crossed the trail toward us and we went around and back to the trail. I have a few other photos of the snake if they would be helpful for identification. This was around 8,000 ft in elevation.

This was found near Queen's Garden...someone killed it. Really not sure why there are not more signs around telling people not to disturb wildlife including reptiles. Probably would not have kept whoever did this from killing the snake but it might have prompted anyone who might have seen this happen to report that person. I was really disappointed to see this beautiful snake dead in such a well traveled area...still, I would be interested in what the snake's formal name was.
