Description: Redroot, Bloodroot (Lachnanthes caroliana) at Frenchman's Forest Natural Area, Palm Beach County Florida. It loves wet pine flatwoods but this year everything is so dry some of my favorite Redroot plants are not doing very well. The plants look a little like irises but each year produce outlandish flower clusters on long stalks. The flowers and stalks are fuzzy. The roots are red-orange and aboriginal people used them for dye and medicine. Date: 16 June 2011, 10:00. Source: Redroot (Lachnanthes caroliana) Uploaded by Jacopo Werther. Description: My yearly homage to Carolina redroot (also called bloodroot). This interesting wetland plant is a member of the bloodwort family (Haemodoraceae) and produces a unique inflorescence of yellow flowers that attract nectaring insects. The fan shaped foliage is also very attractive. Sandhill Cranes love to eat the seeds. A large wet meadow of them bloomed this year by the little frog & duck pond in Juno Dunes Natural Area (south). Native Americans had several medicinal uses for the plant and it's sap has been used for dye. Date: 10 May 2012, 08:27. Source: Carolina redroot (Lachnanthes caroliana) Uploaded by Jacopo Werther. Description: A little leaf-cutter bee goes bottoms up for nectar on a Carolina redroot (Lachnanthes caroliana) blossom. It's a perfect fit as the bee's pollen-collecting belly (scopa) rests upon on a stamen. The bee gets her reward and the pollen is carried to another plant.
