Maximum longevity: 40 years Observations: It is estimated that these animals can live more than 40 years (http://dep.state.ct.us/). Two animals held captive at Zoo Atlanta were at least 35 years old when last reported alive (Herman 1991). There are also anecdotal reports of animals living over 40 years in captivity.
