Length: 44-48 cm. Plumage: brownish grey with wide pale edges to body feathers giving a scalloped appearance, head more ashy with fine speckling; speculum green broadly edged with white. Immature like adult but less mottles. Bare parts: iris yellow in male, orange brown in female <391>, light hazel, scarlet to orange <393>; bill rose pink with pale blue edges and tip; feet and legs dull yellow with dusky webs. Habitat: lagoons, estuaries and tidal flats, but mostly inland waters.<388><391><393>
