This guy was huge! Never seen a grasshopper draw a crowd.

Photographed just behind the beach at Blind Pass on Sanibel Island. Based on the size (TL ~5 cm), I think this is a male; we'd seen a much larger individual at Corkscrew Swamp earlier in the day which was presumably a female.

4 pm, 22 individual nymphs were squashed in the middle of the road. These nymphs usually congregate for a few days after hatching.

I thought this was just priceless. This grasshopper is so voracious, he's trying to chow down on a *picture* of a pizza! I was looking for a size scale (my ruler wasn't handy for some reason, so I was using my hand), and someone else on the trail mentioned that they often used a credit card for the purpose. That sounded good to me; I reached into my pocket & pulled out my motel room keycard, placing it down carefully so as not to spook the bug. And what does he do? He tries to eat it! I'm not putting you on -- you can see his mandibles around the edge of the card! By the way, this is still an immature. The adult is even bigger.
