Carob trees nearby. I've had this one in my files as the Navel Orangeworm Moth, but after comaring the two I believe this species to be much closer, and identical to many photos compared to online, for example: http://www.lepinet.fr/especes/nation/lep/?e=l.html&id=27460# Both are introduced spp. in CA

This is a new yard moth, whatever it is; attracted to a blacklight. My moth differs from @krancmm's version in overall coloration*, but this genus has a very distinctive combination of wing and palpi shape that I can't find in any other Pyralid or Crambid genus. Based on MPG and BG records, the color pattern is highly variable. See further notes on my BG upload here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/1202579/bgimage See also: * http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/2712790 http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=5913

A first for my yard and an apparent westward extension of the range of this distinctive Pyralid. Compare: http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=5591 http://bugguide.net/node/view/839015
