Roughdown Common - Hemel Hempstead - Field Trip - 17/07/14I was joined by David and Roger to Roughdown Common on a very favourable evening weatherwise. We had hit 33 degrees earlier on and as we arrived at Roughdown to start setting up, it was still a heady 25 degrees at 9pm!We did know of storms that were expected early morning, I thought we would be packed up and long gone before they turned up.As the evening went on it got very breezy indeed and this did hamper the catch somewhat...luckily we were just packing up the last trap at 2am when a flash of lightning caught our attention coming in on a Southerly from London. With traps all packed up it was a brisk walk back to the car...most of the gear was loaded and then the heavens opened. The moths were represented by most species but in relatively low numbers for the time of year.I was very very nice to see so many Dark Umbers, Brown Scallops and Maple Pugs.Highlight of the night was a new micro for us all, Metalampra italica a possible accidental introduction in 2003 is responsible for this and all previous records as it was only known in the past from Italy!Catch Report - 17/07/14 Roughdown Common - Hemel Hempstead - 2x 125w MV Robinson Trap, 1x 40w Lucent Suitcase Trap, 1x 160w MBT Robinson Trap & 1x 80w Actinic Suitcase Trap.96 Macros and 80 Micros (176 species)Macro Moths1x Beautiful Hook-tip2x Black Arches2x Bright-line Brown-eye4x Brimstone Moth1x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing6x Brown Scallop2x Brown-line Bright-eye1x Brown-tail2x Buff Arches4x Buff Footman3x Clay3x Cloaked Minor5x Clouded Border1x Clouded Brindle8x Clouded Silver3x Common Carpet2x Common Emerald5x Common Rustic2x Common White Wave10x Coronet8x Dark Arches10x Dark Umber2x Dingy shears1x Dot Moth4x Double Square-spot 1x Drinker2x Dun-bar1x Dusky Brocade3x Early Thorn2x Elephant Hawk-moth1x Fan-foot 1x Fern1x Flame2x Flame Shoulder 2x Ghost Moth2x Green Pug1x Grey Dagger4x Haworth's Pug1x Heart & Club4x Heart & Dart 4x July Highflyer2x Large Yellow Underwing2x Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing1x Lesser Yellow Underwing1x Light Arches1x Light Emerald 1x Lime-speck Pug2x Maple Prominent10x Maple Pug2x Marbled Minor1x Miller3x Mottled Beauty2x Nut-tree Tussock1x Pale Mottled Willow1x Pale Prominent2x Peach Blossom1x Pebble Prominent3x Peppered Moth1x Phoenix1x Pine Hawk-moth 1x Poplar Grey1x Poplar Hawk-moth3x Pretty Chalk Carpet1x Purple Bar2x Red Twin-spot Carpet5x Riband Wave 4x Ruby Tiger1x Rustic2x Scalloped Oak1x Scarce Footman1x Scarce Silver-lines1x Scorched Carpet2x Shaded Broad-bar2x Shuttle-shaped Dart1x Single-dotted Wave1x Six-spot Burnet1x Slender Brindle1x Small Angle Shades2x Small Emerald2x Small Fan-foot10x Small Fan-footed Wave4x Small Rivulet2x Smoky Wainscot2x Snout2x Spectacle5x Swallow-tailed Moth1x Sycamore1x Tawny Marbled Minor1x Tawny Speckled Pug6x Tree-lichen Beauty3x Uncertain1x Vapourer Moth1x White-spotted Pug1x Willow Beauty1x Wormwood Pug1x Yellow ShellMicro Moths1x Metalampra italica [NEW!]6x Blastobasis laticolella2x Blastobasis adustella 5x Pleuroptya ruralis3x Agapeta hamana10+ Agapeta zoegana2x Coleophora sp2x Cydia splendana1x Agonopterix heracliana sp1x Hypatima rhomboidella2x Zeiraphera isertana1x Parornix sp2x Eudemis profundana1x Argyrotaenia ljungiana 1x Eurrhypara hortulata 20+ Chrysoteuchia culmella1x Agonopterix arenella 1x Pandemis cerasana 4x Pandemis heparana1x Pandemis corylana1x Homoeosoma sinuella2x Hofmannophila pseudospretella2x Phycita roborella 2x Celypha lacunana 1x Archips podana 1x Hedya nubiferana 7x Aleimma loeflingiana2x Epinotia demarniana 3x Eudonia mercurella 12x Cnephasia sp 2x Coleophora sp2x Ditula angustiorana 3x Dipleurina lacustrata10+ Eucosma cana3x Batia unitella 5x Acleris forsskaleana2x Argyresthia albistria20+ Eucosma hohenwartiana1x Eucosma obumbratana2x Aspilapteryx tringipennella2x Bucculatrix nigricomella 1x Rhopobota naevana1x Epiblema costipunctana1x Teleiodes vulgella 2x Carcina quercana 1x Pterophorus pentadactyla4x Catoptria falsella1x Oncocera semirubella 2x Pseudargyrotoza conwagana 5x Endotricha flammealis1x Stigmella sp3x Ancylis badiana4x Yponomeuta evonymella1x Phlyctaenia coronata2x Limnaecia phragmitella2x Syncopacma sp2x Plutella xylostella1x Gypsonoma dealbana 2x Spilonota ocellana1x Agriphila straminella2x Crambus perlella2x Dichomeris marginella 2x Eucosma campoliliana 10x Aethes rubigana1x Aethes cnicana2x Batia lunaris 2x Udea prunalis2x Clepsis consimilana1x Pammene fasciana1x Epinotia nisella2x Acentria ephemerella1x Recurvaria leucatella2x Catoptria pinella2 Epiblema uddmmaniana1 Cochylimorpha straminea 1x Eudonia pallida 2x Archips xylosteana 10+ Celypha striana 5x Scoparia ambigualis 2x Yponomeuta evonymella

Up to Beds! Home Wood - Field Trip - 02/07/14 Hi allLast night I joined Matt and Trent (Or Lionel, confused.com lol), at Home Wood near Biggelswade in Bedfordshire, hopping Counties for the first time this year (in fact I shall be travelling to Essex tonight, two Counties in as many days).Conditions were absolutely spot on with dominant cloud cover and a warm sultry temperature we set about our business to cover a nice wide area of the woodland. But before that we had to do a spot of tractor pulling.. well van, as Trent's van got stuck in the mud (I wonder if that piece of rope ever came off the tow-bar?)The evening started well with plenty of micros and Geometers turning up first to the sheet. Then at about 11pm it all went a bit mental really, the traps that we had left were teeming with moths, you could barely see the trap underneath them, peering into the skinner actinic was like something out of a tropical rainforest catch and inhalation was definitely not a good idea at this point!I have yet to write the list up as I have spent all morning photographing all of the moths which hasn't been easy with the warm weather and wind.I think we must be knocking on the door of 200 species of Macro and Micro for the night. Acleris kochiella, Assara terebrella, Eulamprotes atrella, Acleris holmiana, Hedya ochroleucana, Larch Pug, Mere Wainscot, Olindia schumacherana and Zeiraphera ratzeburgiana were new for meSo here are a few beauties from last night, mainly micros and several were new to me.I wonder if we get a first for Bedfordshire out of all the things we potted, and the sack load of tubes heading David Manning's way.Catch Report - 02/07/14 - Home Wood - Nr.Biggleswade - 1x 125w MV Robinson Trap, 1x 160w MBT Robinson Trap & 1x 80w Actinic Suitcase Trap.Numbers below are approximate106 Macros and 67 Micros ( 173 species)Macro Moths2x Barred Red2x Barred Straw1x Barred Yellow5x Beautiful Hook-tip1x Black Arches1x Blackneck2x Blood-vein2x Bright-line Brown-eye5x Brimstone Moth1x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing4x Brown Rustic1x Brown Scallop1x Brown-line Bright-eye2x Brown-tail5x Buff Arches10+ Buff Footman3x Buff-tip1x Burnished Brass1x Chinese Character1x Cinnabar2x Clay20+ Clouded Border2x Clouded Brindle30+ Clouded Silver1x Clouded-bordered Brindle 1x Common Carpet3x Common Footman1x Common Pug2x Common Rustic1x Common Swift2x Common Wave10+ Common White Wave1x Coxcomb Prominent10+ Dark Arches2x Dingy Footman1x Dingy Shears1x Dingy Shell1x Double-striped Pug10+ Dun-bar15+ Dwarf Cream Wave1x Early Thorn1x Elephant Hawk-moth2x Engrailed5x Fan-foot1x Flame1x Garden Carpet1x Ghost Moth4x Green Pug1x Green Silver-lines2x Grey Pug1x Haworth's Pug3x Heart & Club3x Heart & Dart2x July Highflyer1x Larch Pug20+ Large Twin-spot Carpet5x Large Yellow Underwing1x Leopard Moth5x Light Emerald1x Lunar-spotted Pinion1x Maiden's Blush1x Map-winged Swift2x Maple Prominent 5x Marbled Minor10+ Marbled White Spot3x Mere Wainscot 10+ Mottled Beauty2x Oak Nycteoline2x Peach Blossom5x Peppered Moth1x Pine Hawk-moth1x Poplar Grey1x Poplar Hawk-moth2x Pretty Chalk Carpet1x Privet Hawk-moth1x Purple Bar15+ Riband Wave1x Rustic1x Satin Beauty2x Scarce Footman2x Scarce Silver-lines2x Setaceous Hebrew Character3x Shaded Broad-bar1x Shears3x Short-cloaked Moth5x Single-dotted Wave2x Slender Brindle5x Small Dotted Buff5x Small Fan-foot25+ Small Fan-footed Wave1x Small Phoenix5x Smoky Wainscot10+ Snout1x Spectacle1x Spruce Carpet15+ Straw Dot2x Swallow-tailed Moth1x Sycamore2x Tawny Marbled Minor1x Tawny-barred Angle4x Treble Brown Spot2x Uncertain1x V-Pug2x White Satin Moth1x Wormwood Pug8x Yellow-tailMicro MothsAcleris holmiana 1Acleris laterana/comariana 1 Acleris kochiella 1Aethes rubigana 1Agapeta hamana 10+Agapeta zoegana 3Agriphila straminella 3Aleimma loeflingiana 50+Ancylis achatana 2Apotomis capreana 1Archips crataegana 5Archips podana 2Archips xylosteana 2Argyresthia albistria 1Argyresthia brockeella 2Argyresthia goedartella 1Assara terebrella 1Batia lunaris 1Batia unitella 3Blastobasis lacticolella 2Blastodacna hellerella 2Bryotropha terrella 5Catoptria pinella 1Celypa lacunana 8Celypa striana 5Chrysoteuchia culmella 10Cochylis hybridella 2Conobathra repandana 10Crambus lathoniellus 1Crambus pascuella 3Cryptoblabes bistriga 1Dipleurina lacustrata 2Ditula angustiorana 5Endrosis sarcitella 1Ephestia parasitellaEpiblema uddmanniana 3Epinotia bilunana 1Epinotia brunnichana 3Eucosma cana 5Eucosma hohenwartiana 1Eucosma obumbratana 10Eudemis profundana 1Eulamprotes atrellaGypsonoma dealbana 1Gypsonoma sociana 1Hedya ochroleucanaHedya pruniana 5Hedya salicella 1Hofmannophila pseudospretella 2Olindia schumacherana 5Orthopygia glaucinalis 2Pammene fasciana 1Pandemis cerasana 10+Pandemis heparana 2Paraswammerdamia nebulella 3Phycitodes binaevella 1Pleuroptya ruralis 10Prays fraxinella 5Pterophorus pentadactyla 2 Rhopobota naevana 2Scoparia ambigualis 5Scoparia basistrigalis 8Spilonota ocellana 2Syncopacma larseniella sp 5Tortrix viridana 5Zeiraphera ratzeburgiana 1Zeiraphera isertana 10

Catch Report - 26/05/12 - Balls Wood, HertfordAbout 12 or so people turned up for this first official trip of the year. The weather had been hot and sunny for the previous week and at last the nights were warm - not freezing cold! There was a stiff easterly breeze, but in the wood we scarcely noticed it. A total of 7 mv lamps were operated from generators from 21.30 hours until 04.30 the following morning, though only three of us camped out until dawn, with most people heading for home by about 01.00 hours. Interestingly, of the 64 macro species caught, 13 species were caught only in that later period between 01.00 and 04.30. One was recorded as a larva crawling across the sheet - presumably having fallen from the overhanging Hornbeam branches. The macro moth highlight was probably POPLAR LUTESTRING of which we had several. The micros bring the total up to 91 species (with 3 species still outstanding - awaiting genitalia dissection). Best by far is EPINOTIA NANANA (book page 230) which has not been seen in Hertfordshire since 1966 and which I labelled as probably extinct here. The caterpillar feeds on Spruce. In the following list those marked with an asterisk (*) were named by genitalia dissection. Numbers are approximate. If anyone can remember anything that I have not listed do please let me know.Catch Report - 26/05/12 - Balls Wood, Hertford - 7x 125w Robinson Traps26th May 2012: Balls Wood, Hertfordshire: TL 3410 FULL LIST Eriocrania subpurpurella 1 Common Swift fewEmmetia marginea 2Incurvaria oehlmanniella 5Nemapogon cloacella * 2Monopis weaverella 4Tinea trinotella 2 Caloptilia robustella 2Swammerdamia caesiella * 1Elachista argentella 1Esperia sulphurella 3Agonopterix arenella * 1Teleiodes vulgella 1Carpatolechia proximella 2Teleiodes luculella fewPhtheochroa inopiana * fewCochylis nana * 2Syndemis musculana 1Capua vulgana * fewEulia ministrana sevCnephasia communana * 1Celypha lacunana 1Ancylis mitterbacheriana 2Ancylis laetana 5Epinotia subocellana * 2Epinotia tenerana * 1Nut Bud Moth 1Epinotia nanana * 1Epiblema cynosbatella 3---- Scoparia probably ambigualis (awaiting dissection) manyPeach Blossom 1Poplar Lutestring sevMaiden's Blush 2Cream Wave sevRed Twin-spot Carpet 2Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet 1Silver-ground Carpet sevCommon Carpet 1Small Phoenix 2Red-green Carpet 3Spruce Carpet 2Broken-barred Carpet 2Green Carpet sevMottled Pug sevCommon Pug fewBrindled Pug 1Dwarf Pug fewTreble-bar 1Small White Wave 3Seraphim sevClouded Border 1Peacock Moth 1Tawny-barred Angle 2Scorched Wing 1Brimstone Moth 1Scalloped Hazel 3Peppered Moth 1Waved Umber 2Pale Oak Beauty fewBrindled White-spot 1Common White Wave 2 White-pinion Spotted 1Clouded Silver 1Light Emerald 3Lime Hawk-moth 1Poplar Hawk-moth 6Puss Moth 1Poplar Kitten 1Iron Prominent 2Pebble Prominent 2Lesser Swallow Prominent 1Coxcomb Prominent 1Pale Prominent 3Chocolate-tip 5LymantriidaePale Tussock 4Orange Footman sevWhite Ermine 1Buff Ermine 1Muslin Moth 2Cinnabar 1Least Black Arches 3Flame Shoulder 1Twin-spotted Quaker larva on sheetPale Pinion 3Poplar Grey 1Brown Rustic 1Rustic Shoulder-knot 1Treble Lines 2Marbled White Spot fewGreen Silver-lines 1Nut-tree Tussock fewButtoned Snout 1

Farmland - Braughing Friars - Field Trip - 19/07/14The Herts moth group assembled once more on their annual trip to a 10 acre site of Hertfordshire farmland that has been left in 2006 to grow wild. The vegetation was certainly dense and even encroaching over the roads that once had 40 tonne lorries driving up and down it every single day. Those days have long gone and 8 years down the line it is amazing how much nature has really taken a hold and used every inch of space to its full potential. It is really sad that this may be the last time we all get together and trap this site (I hope not)But with sad news comes good news, and boy did we go out in style. The list is still a work in progress with various moths with other people to be checked, I will compile my notes on the night of what we observed to the hanging sheet and all of the traps that we tried to empty carefullyCarefully with two things in mind, the moths flying off and Hornets...of which we had quite a few!The weather was absolutely perfect, warm overcast (most of the time) and humid with a faint southerly breeze at times and a minimum temperature reading on my car at 4am this morning of 18 degrees! The moths...well where do we start. We could of had a field day with all the beetle species that were coming to the traps let alone the 1000s of moths, yep that many I would predict.Stars of the show were Kent Black Arches, Waved Black, Brown-veined Wainscot, Lesser-spotted Pinion and Olive. The micros are now finally done and thanks to Colin Plant and Andy King for extra dissections from moths collected during the night, we seem to have a fair old whack of the Cnephasia species present on the farm for starters! We also got quite a few wetland species suggesting a lot of movement from other habitats.Numbers are very approximate! Please do email me for any corrections and additions chaps.Catch Report - 19/07/14 - Braughing Friars Farmland - Braughing 1x Hanging Sheet with 125w MV, 3x 125w MV Robinson Traps, 1x 40w Actinic June already! On Sunday night I trapped again after a nice weekend break away. The weather was pretty much perfect with increasing cloud cover and the temperature hovering around high teens as it got dark.Quite a few new for years featured in the catch of a modest amount of moths, given the perfect conditions and time of year. Bucculatrix bechsteinella was a brand new moth for me, a little worn which proved a headache trying to identify.Still a field trip to write up from last night....not enough hours in the day! and again might trap in the garden tonight, if it stays dry long enough that is.Catch Report - 01/06/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths8x Heart & Dart [NFY]1x Straw Dot [NFY] 1x Common White Wave [NFY]3x Common Marbled Carpet1x Buff-tip1x Bright-line Brown-eye1x Brown Rustic1x Flame Shoulder3x Shuttle-shaped Dart11x Nutmeg9x Rustic Shoulder-knot2x Brimstone Moth1x Garden Carpet3x Setaceous Hebrew Character 1x Mottled Pug4x Marbled Minor1x Common Pug4x Ingrailed Clay1x Cabbage Moth2x Tawny Marbled Minor2x Vine's Rustic2x Mottled Rustic1x Silver-Y5x Common SwiftMicro Moths 1x Bucculatrix bechsteinella [NEW!]1x Celypa striana [NFY]1x Ephestia parasitella [NFY]1x Caloptilia robustella [NFY]1x Teleiodes luculella [NFY]1x Hedya pruniana [NFY]1x Celypha lacunana2x Mompha subbistrigella1x Scoparia ambigualis1x Argyresthia spinosella1x Phyllonorycter harrisella1x Epiphyas postvittana1x Adela rufimitrella

A trip down to Dungeness in Kent on Saturday night proved to be the coolest conditions we have experienced for a while, with clear skies, bright moon and misty air coming from the sea. As you can imagine it wasn't great and the moths were few and far between, but I did manage a few new ones for me. Yellow Belle, Pale Grass Eggar, Antler Moth, Celypha cespitana, Aroga velocella and Cynaeda dentalis were all new for me. There are still some Bactra's to confirm and a few unidentified micros to sort out.All in all despite the catastrophic weather I was pleased to pick up some new ones.

A pleasing varietyBack to trapping, and with a slightly cooler and less favourable night ahead compared to the two weekend nights, I wasn't expecting much.Luckily the cloud stuck around, and so did the moths and again not a huge amount, but a nice array of new species for the year making it another 10 to add to the year list. The majority of the catch was made up of Mottled Rustic (15) and Heart & Dart (34).A nice splash of colour with Barred Yellow and Small Emerald featuring for the first time this year.Privet Hawk-moth made up the size of the catch quite literally!Catch Report - 15/06/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths1x Shaded Pug [NFY]1x Small Emerald [NFY]1x Buff Arches [NFY] 1x Barred Yellow [NFY] 2x Dark Arches [NFY]1x Privet Hawk-moth [NFY]1x Dot Moth [NFY]2x Green Pug1x Freyer's Pug1x Large Yellow Underwing1x Shuttle-shaped Dart2x Common Footman1x Flame Shoulder 2x Rustic Shoulder-knot15x Mottled Rustic34x Heart & Dart1x Grey Pug1x Light Emerald2x Brimstone Moth4x Marbled Minor1x Tawny Marbled Minor1x Ingrailed Clay1x Green Silver-lines1x Mottled Pug3x Garden Carpet6x Brown Rustic4x Vine's Rustic1x Common Swift3x Mottled Beauty3x Bright-line Brown-eye10x Uncertain1x Pale Mottled Willow1x Treble Lines2x Large NutmegMicro Moths 1x Agapeta hamana [NFY]1x Aphelia paleana [NFY]1x Bryotropha terrella [NFY]3x Tortrix viridana2x Dipleurina lacustrata1x Epiphyas postvittana 2x Celypha lacunana2x Udea olivalis2x Aphomia sociella1x Scrobipalpa acuminatella2x Aleimma loeflingiana1x Chrysoteuchia culmella1x Scoparia ambigualis
