A day late posting for a rightful reason! On Monday night I once again rigged the trap up on timer (early to bed for me at 9) and was quietly confident that I would get a pretty nice catch come the morning. The conditions were perfect if a little breezy, but with a minimum of 16 degrees, a little rain sometime in the night I couldn't have asked for better.Getting up bleary eyed and rubbing my eyes I could not believe it!The trap was probably the fullest it has ever been in my 2 years of trapping here. Moths adorned most of the Perspex collar, and every hole of the egg boxes had at least one moth in it.Macro Highlights were a second garden Small Ranunculus, new for garden Dingy Footman and Large Twin-spot Carpet and the trio Coxcomb, Maple and Pale Prominent.Micros were headed by a first for me, the lovely marked Athrips mouffetella.A slightly knackered Currant Pug which just would not lay flat and kept adorning a Thorn-like posture I didnt record this species last year. Also a worn Epinotia abbreviana after much identifying was a garden first. All the moths were pretty lively for their photo-shoots, well apart from a very dozy Pale Prominent.66 Macros and with only 10 less species of Micros at 56, it really was a stonking night.Tonight looks warm and muggy again, I cant top this list surely!Catch Report - 14/07/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths1x Dingy Footman [NFG]1x Large Twin-spot Carpet [NFG]1x Small Ranunculus [NFY]2x Black Arches [NFY]3x Buff Footman [NFY]2x Coxcomb Prominent [NFY]1x Maple Prominent [NFY]1x Pale Prominent [NFY]1x Straw Underwing [NFY]2x Yellow Shell [NFY]1x Currant Pug [NFY]4x Bright-line Brown-eye2x Brimstone Moth3x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing2x Buff Arches2x Buff-tip1x Burnished Brass2x Clay1x Cloaked Minor1x Clouded Silver11x Common Footman9x Common Rustic3x Common White Wave7x Dark Arches20x Dot Moth3x Double Square-spot2x Double-striped Pug2x Dun-bar1x Dwarf Cream Wave1x Early Thorn1x Elephant Hawk-moth1x Engrailed2x Fan-foot1x Garden Carpet 1x Heart & Club8x Heart & Dart1x Herald3x July Highflyer1x Large Yellow Underwing2x Lesser Yellow Underwing3x Least Carpet1x Light Arches1x Marbled Minor1x Mottled Rustic1x Nut-tree Tussock1x Oak Nycteoline1x Pale Mottled Willow1x Peppered Moth1x Poplar Hawk-moth1x Privet Hawk-moth7x Riband Wave2x Rustic3x Scalloped Oak3x Scarce Footman1x Shaded Pug1x Silver-Y1x Single-dotted Wave1x Small Blood-vein4x Small Emerald3x Small Fan-footed Wave2x Smoky Wainscot1x Spectacle3x Swallow-tailed Moth1x Snout18x Uncertain1x Willow Beauty1x Yellow-tailMicro Moths 1x Athrips mouffetella [NEW!]1x Aethes rubigana [NFG]1x Epinotia abbreviana [NFG]1x Acleris hastiana [NFG]1x Monochroa palustrella [NFG]1x Morophaga choragella [NFG]1x Pammene aurita [NFG]1x Orthopygia glaucinalis [NFY]1x Cochylis hybridella [NFY]4x Blastobasis adustella [NFY]2x Trachycera advenella [NFY]2x Cydia splendana [NFY]3x Phlyctaenia coronata [NFY]1x Bryotropha affinis [NFY]2x Tischeria ekebladella [NFY]1x Ypsolopha dentella [NFY]1x Batia unitella [NFY]1x Pammene regiana1x Bryotropha terrella2x Eurrhypara hortulata1x Agonopterix alstromeriana1x Epiblema uddmanniana2x Celypha striana2x Aphomia sociella1x Emmelina monodactyla4x Yponomeuta evonymella1x Epagoge grotiana2x Acleris forsskaleana1x Cnephasia sp2x Plutella xylostella2x Pleuroptya ruralis2x Hofmannophila pseudospretella1x Scrobipalpa acuminatella3x Endotricha flammealis1x Clepsis consimilana9x Spilonota ocellana1x Hypsopygia costalis1x Oegoconia sp1x Trachycera suavella1x Zeiraphera isertana2x Blastobasis lacticolella1x Scoparia ambigualis1x Phycita roborella2x Udea prunalis1x Pandemis heparana1x Aphelia paleana1x Endrosis sarcitrella1x Ectoedemia decentella5x Eudonia mercurella2x Ditula angustiorana1x Gypsonoma dealbana1x Helcystogramma rufescens1x Celypha lacunana15x Chrysoteuchia culmella2x Dipleurina lacustrata1x Carcina quercana

A Gem of a new moth! + another new MicroOn Wednesday night, I set-up the trap for the last time until Sunday night, as we are currently having a lovely weekend away.Although it rained most of the night and the trap was full of wasps come the morning...it was all very much worth it, with my first ever UK Gem, I was so excited to get this moth and am astonished how it got past all of the town and factory lights to end up in the bottom of my trap. The new Micro was Stenolechia gemmella, thinking it was initially a Carpatolechia species, it turned out to be this pretty species.

A pretty tricky customerAnother warm and muggy night and another quality catch with plenty to smile about and some different moths to compliment the garden list so far.An initial headache over a very pretty micro moth lasted a good hour pondering books, websites and my own photos, the conclusion was a form of Epinotia nisella that I hadn't seen before.A mint Tawny-speckled Pug was probably my favourite moth of the night.Parachronistis albiceps was a good record of a species that is becoming more frequent.Trap out again tomorrow night.Catch Report - 26/07/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths1x Knot Grass [NFY] 1x Lime-speck Pug [NFY]1x Swallow Prominent [NFY]1x Tawny Speckled Pug [NFY]4x Black Arches1x Bright-line Brown-eye1x Brimstone Moth1x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing1x Buff Footman1x Cabbage Moth1x Cloaked Minor1x Common Carpet10x Common Rustic1x Dark Arches1x Dingy Footman5x Dot Moth1x Double Square-spot2x Dun-bar2x Dusky Sallow1x Dwarf Cream Wave 1x Elephant Hawk-moth2x Flame Shoulder2x Flounced Rustic1x Green Pug2x Haworth's Pug1x Heart & Dart2x Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing2x Lesser Yellow Underwing1x Maple Prominent4x Maple Pug1x Marbled Beauty1x Mottled Beauty2x Nut-tree Tussock1x Poplar Hawk-moth1x Red Twin-spot Carpet19x Riband Wave1x Ruby Tiger1x Scalloped Oak1x Shaded Pug3x Shuttle-shaped Dart1x Small Fan-footed Wave1x Small Rivulet1x Snout1x Straw Dot2x Straw Underwing2x Uncertain3x Willow Beauty1x Yellow Shell Micro Moths 1x Paraswammerdamia albicapitella [NFG]1x Epinotia nisella [NFG]1x Parachronistis albiceps [NFG]1x Hofmannophila pseudospretella [NFY]1x Acleris variegana [NFY]1x Cacoecimorpha pronubana [NFY]2x Splionota laricana [NFY]1x Euzophera pinguis [NFY]1x Apotomis betuletana [NFY]5x Carcina quercana21x Blastobasis adustella1x Pyrausta aurata1x Pammene aurita1x Acleris forsskaleana1x Agriphila tristella1x Zeiraphera isertana1x Evergestis forficalis2x Argyrotaenia ljungiana2x Parornix sp1x Cameraria ohridella1x Oegoconia sp1x Blastobasis lacticolella1x Pseudargyrotoza conwagana2x Athrips mouffetella1x Caloptilia betulicola1x Ditula angustiorana7x Agriphila straminella5x Gysonoma dealbana1x Conobathra repandana1x Agonopterix alstromeriana2x Phycita roborella2x Trachycera advenella3x Trachycera suavella8x Dipleurina lacustrata6x Endotricha flammealis4x Chrysoteuchia culmella 2x Pleuroptya ruralis10x Spilonota ocellana1x Eurrhypara hortulata1x Acleris schalleriana2x Argyrotaenia ljungiana3x Cydia splendana4x Argyesthia goedartella1x Yponomeuta evonymella1x Clepsis consimilana2x Batia unitella2x Epiphyas postvittana1x Pandemis corylana4x Plutella xylostella

17th July 2012: Gade Springs Watercress Beds, Hemel Hempstead, HertsI decided to take an hour long drive to these site right across to the est side of Hertfordshire. I was given permission to run traps from the mains electricity point to see what the catch would yield.A fellow Herts moth group member, Roger Prue decided to join me in our quest for some new records for this superb site that runs alongside the Grand Union Canal.3 Traps were set up and switched on at 9.30pm and run until 1am, a combination of 125w MV, 160w MBT and 22w/26w Compact fluorescent combo were used and spaced 50m apart from each other. The conditions were perfect and soon many moths were seen flying, some promptly netted before dusk. The list featured well over 100 species of moths in total and personal highlights for me were 2 new Macro Moth species, Wormwood Pug and Plain Golden-Y.Other good records included Barred Red, Platyptilia ochrodactyla and Recurvaria leucatella.Numbers weren't counted so just species are represented.Macro MothsWormwood Pug [NEW!]Plain Golden-Y [NEW!]Dotted Fan-foot Silver-YBarred RedMinor sp.Light ArchesHeart & ClubNut-tree TussockFan-footSmall EmeraldBurnished BrassDingy ShearsGarden CarpetV-PugJuly HighflyerCommon FootmanCommon RusticLesser Common Rustic (Gen det to be done)Double-striped PugMottled BeautyScarce FootmanLight EmeraldGreen PugBuff ErmineRiband WaveRed Twin-spot CarpetBrimstoneLarge Yellow UnderwingElephant Hawk-mothBright-line Brown-eyeWillow BeautyLesser Broad-bordered Yellow UnderwingCommon CarpetClouded SilverDot MothFlameHeart & DartFlame ShoulderDun-barMottled RusticShaded Broad-barDouble Square-spotBuff ArchesScorched CarpetRound-winged MuslinUncertainLeopard MothDouble LobedDark ArchesLesser Yellow UnderwingFernDrinkerCommon WaveCommon White WaveDingy FootmanDwarf Cream WaveCommon WainscotSmoky WainscotSmall Fan-footed WaveSnoutSingle-dotted WaveYellow ShellMicro MothsPlatyptilia ochrodactyla [NEW!]Pammene fasciana [NEW!]Argresthia sp.Phalonidia manniana Recurvaria leucatellaAethes rubiganaPhlyctaenia coronataElachista maculicerusellaBatia unitellaEucosma canaPhycitodes sp.Coleophora sp.Cnephasia sp.
