Disturbed a parent with 2 fledglings at 13:30. Parent tried to lure me away from the location by flying in a circular route away from the babies, then waited close to the fledglings under a large epiphyte and made regular soft contact calls to the offspring.

A very inquisitive bird captured in the light of my headlamp. It sat less than 2 metres from me and observed my every move for several minutes, often leaning forward and peering into the light as I moved my head.

Probably a juvenile morepork. It was sitting on the track and flew up into a ponga tree. There it sat for a while preening, scratching and observing us for a while before flying off. Seen at mid afternoon.

Flammulated Owl Otus flammeolus near Bridge Gap upper Madera Canyon, Davis Mountains Davis Mountains Preserve (TNC) Jeff Davis Co., Texas 12 June 2005
-
I was doing a bird survey on private property in the Davis Mountains of west Texas in June, 1991. On several nights we went out to look for owls. This Flammulated Owl was located in Ponderosa PIne forest at an elevation of about 7500 ft. We saw three Flammulated Owls that night and I have encountered them in this same area on several occasions in the past 20 years. Two images are shown.
