Laughing Owl (Sceloglaux albifacies), juvenile at nest in cavity under limestone boulderFrom The Extinction Website via Wikimedia CommonsFrom Wikimedia Commons Description:A young bird photographed at its nest in a cavity under a limestone boulder by Cuthbert and Oliver Parr. This photograph was taken about the year 1909 at Raincliff Station, Opihi River, South Canterbury.
This juvenile made its first appearance on the 26th September. Its mother disappeared in early June to a hollow and remained out of sight until early September.
This was the tamest owl I have ever seen. Even after I found him with the flash light,he just sat there and let me get extremely close,up to 4 feet away, and he wasn't going anywhere. After I left he proceeded to serenade my camp for the rest of the night until dawn, with an occasional Elf Owl chiming in just for variety, and some Coyotes Howling too a couple times. The nights in the desert are awesome!
