A colony on a surface blade of kelp. Each individual is extending its feeding tentacles, lophophore. They are spawning fertilized eggs. Each individual compartment is 1mm long.
These bivalves filter feed on organic detritus and plankton. Once numerus in Monerey Bay, they have been greatlly reduced following the return of the sea otter. They also are preyed upon by sea stars.
These free-living polychaetes have eighteen pairs of overlapping scales. Sometimes they live commensally in the tubes of other polychaetes or in moon snail shells occupied by hermit crabs.
Pharaoh cuttlefish are cephalopods related to cuttlefish, squid, octopus and chambered nautilus. They have eight short arms and two long tentacles that are usually tucked neatly into their arms.
