Summary[edit] Description: Leadplant (Amorpha canescens) was found to be one of the most important forbs of mixed and tallgrass prairies when some of the first research on prairie was completed by John Weaver at the University of Nebraska. Although less prevalent today, it can still be found on high quality prairies today. In addition to the obvious purple flowers of the leadplant, there are at least 20 more native species visible in this photo. Lakota's call leadplant the buffalo bellow plant, because its purple flowers appear in summer during the bison rutting or bellowing period. Photo: Tom Koerner/USFWS. Date: 21 July 2010, 16:41.
