Turbinella pyrum (Linnaeus, 1758)
-
Gastropod egg case attached to an octocoral colony on shallow subtidal, aragonite sand seafloor. Gastropods are slug-like molluscs. They occur in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Many of them (snails) make a calcareous, coiled, external shell, which is used for protection from predators. The brown-colored organism shown above is an octocoral. The lighter-colored, segmented structure at center is a gastropod egg case, probably made by Turbinella angulata, the West Indian chank. Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Gastropoda, Turbinellidae Locality: periphery of a small patch reef just west of Cut Cay, eastern Graham's Harbour, northeastern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas
