A black stilt, one of only about 85 wild adult birds left (!), foraging in the shallows of Lake Pukaki with Mount Cook in the background. Habitat modification and mammalian predators have pushed this once abundant bird to the edge of extinction.

Adult and juvenile black stilts. The juveniles were bred in captivity from wild eggs, in a dedicated rearing facility in Twizel, and then released back here. You can see them still being fed while they adjust to their wild home. Dave Murray of the Department of Conservation was explaining black stilt conservation to the students of Lincoln University's Applied Ecology (ECOL302) course on our field trip. The close bird photos are taken holding my digital camera up to my binoculars.
