the animal preyed is some kind of black bird. A Red-tailed Hawk was flying near, but didn't atack.

Is this a Prairie Falcon? I was lucky to get any photos at all, everything happened so fast. This large bird that was not a RTH came into view above some houses (photo 1), looked down to its left, pulled its wings in, dropped down and zoomed like an F-16 along the ridge (photo 2), disappearing behind a house. Reappeared 18 minutes later, flying up and away over the houses (photo 3). Best view is photo 2, of the ridge, you have to look at the original version .
