I believe these birds are Calidris ptilocnemis couesi But I really don't know. They hung around about a week or ten days. They were staying out of the wind on this protected area of the beach. They would make the peeping sounds I have heard from other sandpipers.

Either Rock or Purple Sandpiper. Have heard that extended wing shots will be the key for distinguishing the two, so that's why there are so many photos. Lots of others photographing this bird so it will likely be confirmed soon.
