Four dead American Woodcock I saw at least four more alongside or in the road that I didn't photograph including one on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel leaving the eastern shore and beside the road at the toll booths on the eastern shore. We had a wet snow followed by a week of below freezing temperatures. I knew from last year that weather of this sort was likely to drive them out of the brush where I could see them. I had not previously seen them and had no idea what kind of shape they would be in or that I would see any dead ones.

Odd to see it at a public campsite, not its usual brushy, successional habitat. It was hopping around and seemed to be digging up insects or worms with its long bill.
