Two adults (subjects of previous observations) using diversionary tactics. No nest found.

Chick. Moved when all quiet, parents about 40 metres away each side. Laid flat in the grass / weeds and very hard to detect. Never moved even though my shoe was within 15cm.

The lapwings had several attempts to hatch these eggs but very sadly they kept disappearing at night

Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) -- known to Kiwis as the Spur-winged Plover (I learned all these common names from the NZ field guide, and got home to discover that Kiwis have very different ideas from the rest of the world about what to call their birds :-) ). Common & conspicuous in the North.
