This is the first record of spadefoot breeding in the park, aside from eggs/young tadpoles in a roadside puddle that dried up long before they transformed.

We were hiking down a trail in juniper/coastal sage scrub and heard what sounded like the far off revving of a chainsaw or ATV, or loud revving snoring. Looking up wondering what kind of weird bird it is we go around a corner and practically splash into a large puddle left by recent rains -- with a pair of mating toads. Nice to see they're sill around, though haven't seen them since.

Not sure why there was a dark patch near the nostrils . Raining much of the evening . An early record ?

Sorry for poor photo. Found near same area as large puddle that has since dried up.

Found on road 209 (on asphalt) on rainy evening. About a dozen of others living specimens were also observed around the same stretch. Several more (about 20) had been killed by cars. We also observed about half a dozen Pacific chorus frogs (dead and alive) and 40 (dead and alive) western toads.

Found on side of entrance road on rainy evening.
