A few of the Bule boys subsequentlyproved first-rate assistants in collecting and preserv-ing specimens; Mildbraeds botanical assistant, the admirable Ekomeno, was familiar with a greatmany plants, and was particularly clever in dis-covering those that were new to his masters. Buthis powers of observation were at least equalled bythose of my boy Stepke, whose practised eyesightnever missed any rare zoological specimen. One advantage of having men of different tribeslay in the fact that if anyone stole or committed anyother irregularity, one tribe would invariably telltales of the other to Massa. This was particularlyuseful during our long march through the jungle, asit facilitated the watch I was obliged to keep on thesupply of provisions. But the avarice of both Arabs and Euro-peans has resulted in the destruction of vast numbersof these animals every year. Last summer ninety-one elephants were killed in one day near Gasua, andthirty-seven on another occasion in the neighbour-hood of Gubere. At this rate the elephants will soonbe entirely exterminated. The same may be said of india-rubber. The treesare cut about in the most senseless way, and newones are hardly ever planted. The Company direc-tors are perfectly satisfied so long as they get largetemporary dividends, and the agents care fornothing but their commission, and no one takes thetrouble to enquire whether there will be any india-rubber or ivory left in the years to come. Description: Uganda boasts an extraordinary diversity of habitats, scenery, and wildlife species. The string of protected areas along Uganda's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the Albertine Rift, harbors half the world's mountain gorillas, huge populations of hippos, as well as elephants, chimpanzees, lions, and much more. Because this wildlife is losing ground, USAID and the Wildlife Conservation Society aim to investigate the effects of climate change and habitat destruction on the survival of these species.
