It's a common misconception that I hear repeated often that White-tailed Prairie Dogs hibernate in winter. In my experience, they can be found above ground throughout the winter,on sunny days when its not windy and not bitter cold. They are then therefore an important winter prey for raptors, and indeed I saw 5 Golden Eagles and 11 Bald Eagles near this colony, plus 3 Rough-legged Hawk.

Very large colony, but no active burrows. No sight or sound of any prairie dogs. Vegetation around burrows just starting to come in, so appear to be recently extirpated.
