Summary[edit] Description: English: White or Square-lipped Rhinoceros. The broad, square mouth, and especially the horny edge of the lower lip, facilitate the cropping of grass, its only food. In the picture at the left, this ridge, usually covered by the bulky snout, may be distinctly seen. The head of this species is much longer than that of the common black rhinoceros. From contact with vegetation near the ground, the anterior horn is worn off in front, and its base squarish. The variation in size and shape of horns is extensive. Date: 1920. Summary[edit] Description: English: Playgrounds and feeding grounds of the northern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) Vast stretches of grassland dotted with scattered bushes and trees are their ideal haunts. In April, the vegetation is low, and then many trails are clearly visible. The bare, smooth hillocks in the picture are termite structures, against which the rhinoceroses delight to rub themselves after their frequent mud baths. Date: 1920. Source: Lang, Herbert (1920).
