the brown line at the back of the body and the yellow lines down center of body segments (faint on this one) set it apart from similar Luna Moth which has yellow in between the segments and one large yellow line running lateraly
The moth was hanging upside down on a branch of a Tuscan rosemary plant in our front garden. It's feathery antenna and eye spots are visible in one of the pictures I've uploaded. It was about 3 inches long from its antenna to the tip of its folded wing. I didn't catch it opening it's wings but based on its markings and size I' think it is a Polyphemus moth
