This female which I mistook for another kind of merganser instead of a Hooded Merganser was sitting on the bank of the park with a bunch of other ducks. I have seen the females once before earlier last year but at a great distance using only the Camera to help my vision. I have never seen one this close before. She was very beautiful but had the most weirdest feathers on her head. Most mergansers have what I call the hairdo. They are very elaborate with their head feathers. The Hooded Merganser especially; they look like fire place billows when they raise their crests to show if they are alarmed or to show off for mates and keeping rival males at bay. Hooded Mergansers are a very unique bird and are one of the most interesting characters in the bird world. They are one of my favorites. The males are more colorful than the females but they seem to still chose the browns, blacks, and whites as their colors while the female is brown with some white. They are small and like most diving ducks they sit low in the water when they swim. This is the first time I have seen a Merganser on land. It was one interesting encounter.
