This parrot is the rarest of the rare ~ only about 200 survive. A Recovery Plan has been developed to help the wild population survive. This includes regular population monitoring, the provision of artificial nesting boxes at breeding sites and captive breeding of birds for release. Each year, Adelaide Zoo successfully breeds young for release into the wild group. Along with captive-bred birds from Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria and National Parks in Tasmania, over 80 birds have been released since 1997.... photographed at Adelaide Zoological Gardens, South Australia
