"We can tell it's Gambusia holbrooki and not G. affinis because it has 8 finn rays (Graham H. Pyke: ""A review of the biology of Gambusia affinis and G. holbrooki"", Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries (2005))."

Freshwater. In a ponding area where we were looking at waterbugs. Sorry if the main features are covered, I was with my nephew (7) who was holding them. Maybe 4cm long, didn't look like mosquito fish although they are here.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Plutus Creek is currently blocked by a sandbar from the ocean at Currarong beach, making it a lagoon. There were a lot of these small fish, 2-3cm long, in the shallows. They seemed to enjoy nibbling on my feet.

Plutus Creek wasn't flowing across Currarong Beach into the ocean. This female fish was one of many swimming in the shallow water that was damed by the beach. This capture provides confirmation of the identity of the fish in jadonald's observation. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/4728811
