David, Roger, Steve and myself tried a session trapping on the Westbrook Hay site consisting of unimproved grassland and surrounding ancient woodland. We parked up and intended to run a few traps from the Old Barn electrics and then walk with a few traps and the genny to somewhere towards Ramacre Wood, overlooking Hay Wood as well. Unfortunately the electric sockets in the Old Barn did not work (although strangely all the lights did) so after setting up two traps and laying 100 metres of cable to find they wouldn't work, we had to pack it all up and go to plan B, take all but one of the traps with us alongside the bridlepath leading to Ramacre Wood. This part of Westbrook Hay has been previously untrapped, unfortunately it was very humid (good for moths) and we were plagued by Horse-flies, well I was! One got the tip of my index finger but I got off lightly luckily. Not to be put off anymore, as soon as I pulled the cord on the generator the wind got up! You couldn't make it up! Luckily the wind was on and off, but when it was on it was blowing quite considerably. I thought we should put a trap on the bridlepath shielded from the wind, and this trap did pretty well indeed. All in all a great trip marred by a few niggles, you can't have it all I suppose. The catch was mainly made up of Middle-barred Minor, Straw Dot, Tortrix viridana, Pseudargyrotoza conwagana, Aleimma loeflingiana and Chrysoteuchia culmella. Highlights were Green Arches, White-point, Phlyctaenia perlucidalis, Alabonia geoffrella and Archips crataegana. Stenoptilia pterodactyla was potted up in my car, it must have still been in one of the traps as we were loading them in. Identified by its white costal streak. Summary[
edit] Description: Wednesday evening at Ashwell Quarry On Wednesday evening the car was all packed and ready for another visit to Ashwell Quarry. On arrival at 8pm it was still warm at 17 degrees but the sky looked quite menacing coming in from the South-west and rain was forecast for around 2am. Thinking that the breeze was going to blow the rain in way before the predicted time, I decided to leave the gear in the car and have a walk around with the net. I found many different species (18 to be precise) which was pleasing enough in itself and so as the first few rain drops fell at just after 9pm, I wimped out and decided to schedule the trip for another night. Below are a few of the best species I netted. Pseudargyrotoza conwagana, Celypha lacunana and Nemapogon cloacella were by far the commonest species netted with about 2 in 3 species netted being one of these! On specimen of Pseudargyrotoza conwagana did stand out with its dark markings, all of the others were very pale yellow. Of note was a second record for the site of the uncommon Phtheochroa sodaliana. I will be back soon to try again at dusk and hopefully into the night as well. Date: 8 June 2017, 07:13. Source:

Catch Report - 03/07/11 - Farmland/Back Garden - Hertfordshire Trapped last night under semi-cloudy conditions and perfect temperatures once again. Little or no wind made the catch immense come the morning, the final tally is 91 species. Best species were a single Small Mottled Willow and 2 Dark Sword-grass, which are migrants from Europe. Other species of note included my first Mompha propinquella & Stenoptilia pterodactyla and also an unidentified micro, which turns out to be Eulamprotes atrella a good record for Hertfordshire. Summary[
edit] Description: Garden Catch 06/07/18 - A continuing theme A continuing theme recently with back to back catches in the garden to take advantage of the warm weather, this week in July was just sweltering..with highs of nearly 30 degrees and minimum night time lows of around 16 degrees! So it was time to break out the 250w clear for the occasion. September Thorn was a new for year, a moth that really needs a common name change! It is a regular second to third week July moth, with stragglers into August. I have yet to record it in September! Oncocera semirubella was a new Micro moth for the garden, a tatty individual unfortunately and also new for my garden was the Ringed China-mark Parapoynx stratiotata. Both species excpected eventually but it might be a while before I see them again as the former is associated with chalk grassland and the latter wetland. After those two.to get a third new species for the garden was extremely pleasing, in the shape of the plume moth Stenoptilia pterodactyla. It was good to record Zelleria hepariella, an unsual moth and only my second garden record (After the first just last year). Agriphila straminella was a good 2 weeks early looking back on 12 years of data, I guess the warm weather is speeding species emergence times up somewhat. Garden species count for 2018 now upto 335. Here are the new for year species. Hexton Chalk Pit - Field Trip - 01/07/14 Roger and myself ran 3 traps at Hexton Chalk Pit on Tuesday evening, with Steve turning up at dusk for some moral support and staying with us until midnight. The reserve is a lovely habitat with a multitude of wildflowers growing on the chalk grassland. There are patches of bare chalk, but there could be more, as Bramble is starting to take over certain areas of the chalk grassland. The day had been mild and breezy with a high of around 21 degrees, but by dusk the sky was still crystal clear and the breeze was on the cool side and coats were worn pretty much from the off in fact hats wouldn't have felt out of place! with a low of 8 degrees when I was on my way home at 3am we were totally blown away by what we did manage to catch... For starters I managed 3 new Macro moths for me, Grey Arches, Reddish Light Arches and Royal Mantle (previously seen in Slovenia for the first time). Even better were some of the Micro's that turned up Firstly we had two Agonopterix liturosa, which currently is quite scarce in Herts with a handful of records. Secondly we had I would say 20+ of the Pyralid, Paratalanta hyalinalis. I had two, but one escaped whilst photographing them, typically only a photo of a battered one. One is with Roger. No records since 1937, confirmed! And a very good moth indeed. Other notable species included Satyr Pug, Dark Umber, Shark and 5 Wood Carpets (Only having previously seen one before, to record 5 in a single trip is quite overwhelming). On the Pyralid front we got Paratalanta hyalinalis in great numbers, along with 5 Ebulea crocealis and 5 Sitochroa verticalis. To round this post off, the session was an incredible insight in to just how important this habitat is despite it's small size and relative remoteness. A micro-climate indeed... I shall be going back! Catch Report - 01/07/14 - Hexton Chalk Pit - Hexton - 1x 125w MV Robinson Trap, 1x 160w MBT Robinson Trap & 1x 80w Actinic Suitcase Trap.
